Overview

Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from 1336 to 1565.

The city was a prosperous trading center, home to many temples, farms, and markets, and was once the second-largest city in the world. The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates in 1565, and the city was pillaged and destroyed. Today, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features over 1,600 surviving remains of the empire, including temples, palaces, forts, and other structures.
